Steve Hall

During his career in schools, Steve helped numerous schools set up and develop community and business links. Whilst a headteacher, he was also an Ofsted Inspector, an Associate Inspector for Staffordshire County Council and worked with organisations such as BECTA, British Council and the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust. His international work has taken him to work with schools and communities in a number of countries across Europe and in North America, Australia and Africa.

He is currently a Trustee of the Education Futures Collaboration, helping to create MESHGuides which provide research-based evidence to inform teachers’ professional practice in 196 countries around the world. As an executive member of EFC/MESH he represents the Trust on the UNESCO Teachers Task Force 2030 thematic groups for Educational Leadership and for Digital Teaching and AI. A practitioner at heart, he is an advocate of personalising learning, learner empowerment and community-focused education promoting a ‘Doing Education Differently’ philosophy through his writing, podcasts and his broadcasting with VoicEd Radio. 

Steve is an irreverent innovator and non-conformist, earning himself the accolade of maverick headteacher and leader. He is passionate about learning and helping learners and other learning practitioners to become the best that they can be. He loves sailing and has no plans to retire just yet.

Research interests

Steve’s research interests include exploring the potential of cooperative communities ‘growing their own’ teachers through access to work-based routes for teaching assistant and teacher training. His learning-focused paper ‘Where is the White Space?’ was featured by the University of Melbourne in their recent ILETC Transitions Symposium in London and by the Learning Teacher Network at conferences in Tallinn, Estonia and Aarhus, Denmark.
