Environmental Laboratory

Our large environmental laboratory hosts several types of research and teaching focused on plants, animals and their habitats.

The understanding of the environment we live in has never been more important. We as a society are increasingly more aware of the wide variety of impacts we have on the ecosystems around us.

Our work is varied and ever-changing, but some examples are:

  • The analysis of soil for its composition and ability to support plant growth.
  • The spread and impacts of microplastics in our environment.
  • The Forensic recovery and examination of fibres from crime scenes and evidence.
  • The identification and mapping of invertebrates from around the world.
  • Investigating and documenting the changing animal and plant populations around the UK.
  • Supporting and analysing samples or data from geographical research.
