Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry

Liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LCMS) separates out the individual components in an aqueous mixture which are detected by a sensitive time of flight mass spectrometer.

Liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LCMS) separates components of a mixture by using a liquid mobile phase and various stationary phases (a column). The components will separate in the column as each component will have a different affinity for the stationary and mobile phase, therefore, the components will reach the detector at different times. A time of flight mass spectrometer can determine the mass of the components to low concentration levels.

 

The major applications of LCMS are (but not limited to) toxicology for forensic science, metabolites in fluid for biomedical applications, drug development in pharmaceutical sciences and the analysis of environmental samples for pesticides.
