Collecting the full set of robes
Whilst studying for his GCSE’s Andrew went on a brief work experience placement - and didn't leave the company for the next 10 years.
Initially starting full time work, it was in his mid 20s that he decided formal academic qualifications would sharpen his hands-on business acumen. He chose the University of Staffordshire's Stoke campus, starting with a Graduate Skills Bridging Course before moving on to a Postgraduate Certificate, professional HR credentials, and an MA. Ten years later, he returned to complete a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA).
"I have a full set of black, grey, and red robes from the university," Andrew smiles. "Having gone straight to work at 18, my time at Staffs showed me that the skills I developed in a vocational setting fit into a wider body of academic work. It gave me the underpinning knowledge to push what was possible and deliver fantastic results."
The turning point: Stepping into the boardroom
Andrew’s initial postgraduate studies were designed to help him make a major career pivot from sales and operations into Human Resources.
"Whilst I had managed people, I didn't have the theoretical framework to really get the most out of teams at a macro scale," he recalls. "Everyone else in the class was already in HR, while I only had general management experience. My studies convinced me that I actually could go on and make a successful career in the sector."
That conviction paid off rapidly. After a formative role as a Learning and Development Manager for Vodafone’s retail division, Andrew landed his first major break: being elevated to the board of DFS Furniture just as he finished his Masters in HR at Staffs.
Suddenly responsible for the people strategy of one of the UK's most recognizable retailers, Andrew put his master's research on employee engagement directly into practice. His initiatives helped drive DFS into the Sunday Times 'Best Companies to Work For' listings and supported the business as it transitioned from a family-owned firm through private equity and into the FTSE 250.
"I learned it was entirely possible to have a profitable, sustainable business that looked after its employees well," he says.
Driving multi-billion-dollar success
Andrew went on to complete three highly successful stints as Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) across the retail, automotive, and financial services sectors. His leadership consistently proved that workplace culture dictates commercial triumph.
At financial technology firm Equiniti, Andrew and his team dramatically overhauled employee engagement, rocket-fueling it from a low 26% to a staggering 83%. Under his stewardship, the firm was recognized as the second-best UK employer in Financial Services by the Financial Times and Statista, and a top five employer globally by the Top Employers Institute. Concurrently, the business underwent a massive commercial transformation, increasing EBITDA six-fold to approximately $485 million before eventually being sold for a staggering $4.2 billion.
"HR excellence and business performance go hand in hand," Andrew notes. His trailblazing work has earned him a trophy cabinet of individual accolades, including being named CHRO of the Year, winning Best Academic Paper at the British Academy of Management, and receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award from HRO Today Magazine. He has also been named twice to the prestigious CIPD HR30 list of the most impactful practitioners in the industry.
Inspiring the next generation
Today, Andrew operates as a Non-Executive Director for the corporate development specialists at Dove Nest Group. He has transitioned his executive experience into a thriving portfolio as a speaker, author, and consultant on business transformation and employee engagement.
"My days are incredibly varied," Andrew says. "One day I'm standing in front of thousands of people at a conference, next I'm typing a newsletter into my Mac. Every day is about helping organizations make work a better place to be."
His weekly LinkedIn newsletter on HR and leadership now commands thousands of subscribers. Additionally, he influences the future of the sector by sitting on the CIPD AI Advisory Board.
Proud to be Staffordshire
Looking back at his decorated multi-decade relationship with the university, Andrew attributes much of his strategic confidence to the foundations laid at Staffordshire. For current students aiming to replicate his climb to the C-suite, his advice centers on diligence and staying curious:
"University has much in common with the world of work. Apply yourself diligently, read the books, learn the historical context in your field, challenge what is known already, and above all else, try and be lucky! Use AI, but use it for research, not to do the work for you."
