Work experience

You can choose to take a placement year on many of our undergraduate courses. You’re also be able to collaborate on research projects with organisations in the criminal justice system. These include police forces, forensic nurses, professional bodies, forensic investigation units and laboratories.

Subject-related opportunities are also available which could enhance your experience and skillset. For example you could join our FaCS Student Society, learn more about forensic archaeology on a dedicated module, undertake a placement with Staffordshire or Derbyshire Police Forensic Units, or get in touch with our Global Connections team to find a placement or study opportunity overseas.

What's more, we also have a Cold Case Unit, where some of our students have the opportunity to work with experts to revisit historical unsolved crimes. This enhances work experience and practical skills, giving the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in a real-life setting.

You’re actually out in the field gaining experience

What I enjoy most about the course is that you’re not just sitting in a lecture theatre all of the time being spoken to. You’re actually out in the field gaining experience, you’re very practical, visiting prisons and having prison officers and governors come in and speak to us.
