Learning from industry: a career built on real projects
Few things sharpen a student's sense of what's possible like hearing directly from someone who's built a career doing it. That's exactly what students got from Josh Smith, an Electrical Engineer and Project Manager at Mott MacDonald (and proud University of Staffordshire alumnus).
In his talk, "Designing My Career: Projects, Challenges, and Lessons Learned," Josh walked students through his own journey from university to leading complex engineering projects in industry, sharing the real challenges and lessons along the way. The session opened up into interactive discussion, giving students the chance to ask direct questions and pick up practical advice for shaping their own careers.
Mastering the grid: power systems expertise
In the Electrical Power System Engineering (ELEC61030) module this semester, students built genuine expertise in the techniques that keep modern power systems running: load flow studies, protection coordination, economic dispatch, and unit commitment. These are core skills for an energy sector being reshaped by rising demand, renewable integration, and increasingly dynamic grid behaviour.
Alongside this technical grounding, students sharpened the professional skills that turn strong engineers into confident ones: problem-solving, teamwork, and clear communication. This is vital early career preparation, from interview readiness to presenting technical work with confidence, giving students a genuine head start on the demands of professional practice.
