From award-winning student work to hands-on circuit design and direct lines into the energy sector, our Electrical and Electronic Engineering students are proving, semester after semester, exactly what this degree can lead to.

A proud moment: celebrating Jack Cartlidge

Every so often, a student's work stands out not just for its technical strength, but for the consistency and character behind it. This year, that student is Jack Cartlidge, recipient of the Prof. Bob Morrison Prize.

Jack's achievement reflects exceptional technical ability paired with genuine diligence, professionalism, and consistently high standards throughout his degree. His thorough, curious approach to engineering (combined with a strong work ethic) is exactly what we aim to instil in every student who joins us. His success is a proud moment for the department and a clear benchmark for his peers to aim towards.  Congratulations Jack!

 

Learning from industry: a career built on real projects

Few things sharpen a student's sense of what's possible like hearing directly from someone who's built a career doing it. That's exactly what students got from Josh Smith, an Electrical Engineer and Project Manager at Mott MacDonald  (and proud University of Staffordshire alumnus).

In his talk, "Designing My Career: Projects, Challenges, and Lessons Learned," Josh walked students through his own journey from university to leading complex engineering projects in industry, sharing the real challenges and lessons along the way. The session opened up into interactive discussion, giving students the chance to ask direct questions and pick up practical advice for shaping their own careers.

 

Mastering the grid: power systems expertise

In the Electrical Power System Engineering (ELEC61030) module this semester, students built genuine expertise in the techniques that keep modern power systems running: load flow studies, protection coordination, economic dispatch, and unit commitment. These are core skills for an energy sector being reshaped by rising demand, renewable integration, and increasingly dynamic grid behaviour.

Alongside this technical grounding, students sharpened the professional skills that turn strong engineers into confident ones: problem-solving, teamwork, and clear communication. This is vital early career preparation, from interview readiness to presenting technical work with confidence, giving students a genuine head start on the demands of professional practice.

 

Celebrating our graduates and looking ahead

As our graduates step into the next stage of their careers, we're proud of how many are already securing strong positions across the sector, including graduate roles in power systems, electrical design, and consultancy at organisations like GE Vernova, Siemens, and Hitachi Energy.  As with our other Alumni, we're confident they'll continue building on what they've achieved here and go on to make a real contribution to the profession.

We're also celebrating early career achievements of recent graduates such as Huda, who has completed her first year as Lead Application Engineer at GE Vernova.  Huda secured her role prior to graduation (and was a great graduate speechmaker!) after a successful industrial placement as part of her BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree.

We're also looking forward to welcoming several graduates back for postgraduate study, as they deepen their expertise further. And as the new academic year approaches, we're excited to welcome a new cohort of students and continue supporting our current learners, including those progressing through their foundation years, every step of the way.
