Mark is an experienced school leader with a successful career in Staffordshire. An executive head, he chaired the Stoke Headteachers’ Association and later served as Head of Primary at Wellington College Hangzhou returning to England in 2021.

Damian Harty

Engineering

Damian has held senior engineering roles with Prodrive, Tesla, Polaris and REE. Damian has worked with vehicles featuring two to 10 wheels – covering powersports, military and world-class motorsports.

Peter Hunter

Forensics

Peter Hunter is Head of Forensics at Staffordshire Police. Peter is also a board member of the Staffordshire Forensics Partnership, which provides opportunities for students to get hands-on experience.

Richard Harper

Games Art

The University of Staffordshire graduate has been instrumental in developing tools, automation systems and scalable workflows for Rare. Rich has also supported major projects, including Sea of Thieves and Everwild.

Gary Napper

Games Design

Gary has worked on many games, including the Harry Potters series, Burnout and Black, and as lead design for Spare Parts. Gary specialises in level design, game integration and gameplay balancing.

Chris Fitzpatrick

Games Programming

Chris currently guides EA SPORTS WRC’s live service. Chris blends gameplay expertise with hands-on engineering, having steered track physics, vehicle handling and build pipelines.

Natasha Thomas

Law

Natasha has more than a decade of experience in civil litigation and is the supervising solicitor for University of Staffordshire’s Legal Advice Service.

Hector Musonza

Nursing and Midwifery

Hector is a Practice Education and Preceptorship Lead at North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare NHS Trust. Hector has undertaken a variety of clinical roles before moving into an educational role within clinical practice.

Nick Brown

Operating Department Practice

Nick is an Anaesthesia Associate and Operating Department Practitioner with a local NHS Trust. Nick will draw on his extensive experience to explore where a career in operating department practice could take you.

Alex Povey

Paramedic Science

Alex began his journey in paramedic practice at University of Staffordshire, completing his degree in Paramedic Science. He is now part of the Hazardous Area Response Team, a highly specialised and demanding role within the ambulance service.

Mike Oliver

Psychology

Mike is a registered Health Psychologist, Chartered Psychologist and Visiting Fellow. He owns Health Psychology Matters Ltd and consults on practical psychology to improve health outcomes across individuals, communities, workplaces and healthcare.

Adam Cookson

Sport

Adam is a Football Development Manager at Stoke City FC.

Alex is a Senior Participation and Workforce Lead at Staffordshire Football Association.

Biomedical Science

Becoming a Biomedical Scientist is a protected titled. Successfully completing your studies at University of Staffordshire means you can though as our course is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Sciences (IBMS). 

As Senior Biomedical Science Officers in the NHS, both Alexander Makanga and Zuzana Tothova will speak alongside our current students about the value and benefits of studying at University of Staffordshire and why we wone the Best Educator at the inaugural IBMS awards in 2024.

They will speak about the industry links we bring to our learning and the importance of our active learning within our fantastic labs.

Business

The founders of Snappy Gurus – who help talented graduates land their first roles – will be joining a panel with experts from Midlands Power and the University’s Entrepreneurship Manager Marc Williams.

They will be discussing developing an entrepreneurial mindset, essential skills for business graduates in 2026 and building personal and professional resilience for succeeding at university and beyond.

Computing and Esports

Led by Tech Skills, the panel will be delving into the world of computing and discussing key issues relevant to the industry including cyber security, the ethical use of AI and AI integration across wider industries.

The panel will discuss the skills needed by graduates in this rapidly developing and fast paced industry and the career pathways, including emerging roles that a computer science related course can lead to.

Creative Industries

What are the biggest challenges and opportunities in the creative industries sector? Our panel will reflect on topics including AI and technology disruption and its impact on the sector, focusing on how graduates can embrace these changes and use them to get ahead of the game.

Forensics

In 2025 we celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the Staffordshire Forensics Partnership between University of Staffordshire and Staffordshire Police.The partnership has been recognised as being national best practice by the Director of Forensic Services at the UK Government’s Home Office.

Peter Hunter (Head of Forensics at Staffordshire Police) will be joined by current students who have been involved with the SFP, explaining how this is one initiative of many which enable students to get ready for a career in the criminal justice system or other scientific fields in the UK and internationally.

New technologies including generative AI, mixed reality and cloud infrastructure are transforming the Games industry. Join Gary Napper and Laurence Oldham (from EA) as they explore key considerations of games design and emerging trends in the industry.

Games Programming

Join Jake Hayton (Forth Star), John Whiles (Playground) and Angharad Hill (Rebellion) to discover what it’s like to be a programmer within the industry. Our panel members will reflect on the key issues in games programming in 2026 and how they are responding to these challenges in their current roles.

Operating Department Practice

This session will give you the opportunity to hear first-hand how clinical training and professional experiences shape successful careers in Operating Department Practice (ODP). Here we bring together current students, alumni, and academic staff to provide a well‑rounded view of the journey from student to qualified practitioner and beyond.

You will hear insights into the panel’s experiences of clinical placements, simulation-based learning, and working within multidisciplinary theatre teams across a range of perioperative settings and gain an understanding of the diverse career pathways available to ODP graduates. 

Paramedic Science

The role of the paramedic has evolved rapidly in recent years, extending far beyond traditional emergency response to encompass a wide range of clinical, leadership, education, research, and specialist roles across the NHS and wider healthcare system.

This interactive panel session brings together qualified clinicians, current students, and academic staff to share their collective experience of modern paramedic practice.

Panel members will explore the breadth of opportunities available to you as a future paramedic, offering honest insight into career pathways, role development, and the realities of working in an increasingly complex healthcare environment.

Psychology

Join our industry panel to hear from professionals, gain valuable insights into career pathways, workplace experiences, and how postgraduate study can open doors to diverse opportunities.

The panel will bring together a diverse range of people from various roles within the field and who followed different pathways to achieve their current position.

Social Work / Health and Social Care

Service users and carers play a vital role in shaping effective, ethical, and compassionate social work. Their lived experience brings authenticity, challenge, and depth to social work education, helping future practitioners to understand the human impact of policy, assessment, and intervention beyond theory and procedure.

During this session, you will hear directly from members of the university’s service user and carer group about the impact that social work has had on their lives. Through personal stories and shared reflections, you will gain insight into the real‑world outcomes of social work practice from those who experience it first-hand.

Sport

University of Staffordshire are the principal partners of Staffordshire FA and Stoke City FC’s Community Foundation.

Both Alex Scott and Adam Cookson from each organisation will be joined by students who have had opportunities to gain incredible experiences working with these organisations whilst on their studies.

Hear how students have not only just undertaken placements or project work to help their studies but who have also gained paid work or other vital experiences with these organisations and others so they are best prepared for a career in sport and exercise.

You’ll also explore some of the ways we help students stand out from the crowd, including skills badges and professional certificates that impress employers.

Biomedical Science

Have the chance to put a lab coat on and practise your skills in our amazing Science Centre labs.

You’ll have the chance to use some original samples and conduct cellular behaviour when they are exposed to stressful conditions - just like what Alexander Makanga and Zuzana Tothova do in their day-to-day jobs as Senior Biomedical Science Officers in the NHS when enhancing diagnostic procedures and improving patient outcomes.

Business

Step Into the Boardroom: Industry Masterclass Experience

This interactive masterclass is designed to put your decision-making skills to the test.

You will take on the role of a senior leadership team within a live business scenario, working with real-world data and industry-style challenges.

In this session, you will:

  • Make high-stakes strategic decisions under pressure
  • Work collaboratively to solve complex business problems
  • Balance financial, operational, and customer considerations
  • Present and justify your decisions like industry professionals

Regardless of whether you are studying business, marketing, accounting, or events management, you will have a key role to play in shaping the outcome.

This is not a lecture. It is a hands-on experience designed to reflect how decisions are made in real organisations.

Education

At this year’s Industry Festival, our Education team is excited to offer a hands on outdoor experience designed especially for our incoming students across Education Studies, Early Childhood Studies, and Primary QTS. The session will introduce you to two highly relevant areas of professional practice: Makaton communication and active phonics.

You will take part in an interactive Makaton workshop, exploring how simple signs and symbols can support inclusive communication and deepen children’s understanding.

Alongside this, our active phonics session will get you moving, demonstrating playful, physical approaches to early literacy that you can take straight into educational settings. These practical workshops will give you a real taste of the creative, child centred methods you’ll be developing throughout your degree, will help you begin building the skills and confidence that are essential in today’s education sector.

Engineering

Test your problem-solving skills as you design a mini wind turbine that can produce enough energy to light up a home.

Forensics

Bring forensic work to life by taking part in an engaging mock scenario exercise that directly links skills developed on our course to real-world practice. Through short, hands-on tasks, you’ll test your accuracy, attention to detail, and core forensic competencies.

The activity highlights how these skills match forensic roles currently being advertised, while also giving insight into what employers look for in interviews and beyond; all features we embed throughout our courses.

Get hands-on drawing shapes and exploring the concept art behind a sword, shield, spaceship and monster.

Games Design

Step into the role of a games designer for this hands-on session, where you’ll turn your ideas into a playable level and test your design.

Games Programming

Your chance to program your first game in C++, with some expert insights from Ryan Buxton who works at D3T.

Games Art

Explore how to create a game environment in Unreal Engine 5, with everything from landscaping tools to material setups.

Law

Step into the role of a legal professional as you deal with a real-world dispute – involving escaped animals, neighbour conflict, and personal injury.

Nursing and Midwifery

This interactive Nursing and Midwifery Masterclass is a fantastic opportunity for offer holders to get a head start and step confidently into university life.

You’ll take part in engaging simulation activities that bring nursing and midwifery to life, helping you develop essential core skills while building confidence in problem‑solving, communication, and team working.

You’ll also gain hands‑on experience with key clinical equipment, including tools used for A–E assessment and basic observations, giving you an authentic insight into what you’ll be learning from day one.

This masterclass is designed to boost your confidence, ease your transition into study, and get you feeling prepared, motivated, and excited to begin your journey into nursing or midwifery.

Operating Department Practice

A great opportunity to focus on core clinical principles for Operating Department Practice, this session will demonstrate how these essential skills form the foundation for progression into more advanced and specialist roles within perioperative care.

Through guided activities, demonstrations, and discussion, you will explore how basic competencies developed early in training are reinforced, refined, and expanded as you gain experience. Through this session you will gain a realistic understanding of how skills evolve from university teaching and simulation into confident clinical practice.

Paramedic Science

Emergency Airway Management – This masterclass will give you a hands-on introduction to one of the most critical aspects of pre-hospital care: emergency airway management.

Our experienced academic staff and practitioners will take you from fundamental assessment and basic techniques to exploring how these skills evolve with increasing clinical responsibility and complexity.

This is a great opportunity to see how our paramedic courses translate theoretical knowledge into real-world practice. You will get to experience the practical, problem-solving nature of Paramedic Science and understand how foundational skills form the building blocks of advancing clinical practice.

Psychology

Get hands on experience through our masterclass detailing how our psychology graduates put what they have learned in the classroom into practice as professional psychologists or part of the wider psychological workforce.

University of Staffordshire offers postgraduate opportunities in counselling as well as prestigious professional doctorate programmes in both Clinical and Health Psychology.

This masterclass will provide valuable insights into the world of professional practice (e.g., therapeutic interventions) as well as how the Psychology Department at University of Staffordshire can help you to prepare for the world of work and achieve your career aspirations. .

Social Work / Health and Social Care

This masterclass will explore how communication underpins assessment, relationship‑building, and professional decision‑making across a wide range of social work settings.

You will experience how theory translates into practice, and how communication skills develop throughout social work training.

It provides a valuable glimpse into the role of the social worker and the importance of placing service users and carers at the centre of professional practice.

Sport

Get ready to participate in some of the various fitness testing in our Sir Stanley Matthews Sports Hall.

We’ll run you through a battery of tests our students administer to external guests - whether they're high-performance sports performers (like in the NFL draft or football referees), general populations, specialist workers who need to maintain their fitness like police officers and fire service personnel, or wider populations who are following a rehabilitation programme when returning to fitness.

Plus you’ll get to see the industry leading kit our students use throughout their studies.

Start mapping out your journey through university and into your dream graduate job. Choose the activities and experiences you want to include in your degree – and we’ll help you plan the steps to make it happen. 

Your ‘Future Me’ workshop will be packed with inspiration. Our Careers and Placement Team will take you through the wide range of paid internships, placements and funded international opportunities open to you as a student. And if you’re interested in freelancing or setting up a side hustle, we’ll introduce you to funding to kick-start your business ideas.
