The Big Biology Day at Staffordshire University, as part of The Royal Society of Biology’s Biology Week 2019, is a family friendly and free mini science festival with biology at its heart located at our Science Centre on our Stoke-on-Trent campus. We aim to promote any, and all, areas of biology.
Last year’s event was a big success with over 500 people in attendance to see the stands and participate in the workshops and activities. With our Big Biology Day now in its fifth year we’re gearing up to make this year bigger and better than ever before.
At Staffordshire University we are passionate about biology and want to engage as many people as we can with not only what we do here, but also with all of the biology that is around us all of the time. We will have guided walks around our nature reserve, small mammals, bugs and bees alongside fun demonstrations and interactive stand activities for the whole family to get involved with!

This year we’ll see the return of the much-loved Great Biology Bake Off, our biological take on the Great British Bake Off. We welcome entrees to bake a cake or cakes with a decorative theme of biology. We want entrees to capture the biology that is of interest to them and to present it in cake form. We encourage people to be as imaginative and creative as possible. Judging will be largely based on how the bake looks and how well it represents the aspect of biology you have chosen.
Age Categories:
Professional bakers are welcome to enter, but please declare this when you submit your cake.
Competition entries can be delivered to the Science Centre on Leek Road between 9am and 4pm on Friday 11th October and between 10am and 12pm on Saturday 12th October. Judging takes place at 2pm on Saturday 12th October with prizes donated by sponsors awarded to winners.
