Studying Art and Design

Meet your course leader!

Nigel Turner welcomes you to Art and Design Foundation.

As Course Leader for Art and Design Foundation, I have over 12 years’ experience teaching and developing art and design courses across different programme levels.  In my time at University of Staffordshire I have been Senior Lecturer for both the BA (Hons) Automotive & Transport Design (ATD) course and the BA (Hons) Product, Furniture, Ceramics (PFC) course. I have also been Course Leader for MA Ceramics, and in my spare time I am a semi-professional artist painting landscapes and portraits in mixed media.

I also have over 20 years’ experience as a designer for many well-known brands, in particular working for 10 years at Michelin as a Product Development Manager for their global licensing division. I have also designed luxury homewares and accessories for Royal Doulton, Wedgwood, Jeff Banks, Pringle of Scotland, the Oneida Group, & Asprey’s of London.

At the heart of my teaching is a supportive approach to helping students with their understanding art and design, and the progression of their skills through thinking and drawing. I find that having a friendly and open teaching style brings the best out of my students, it encourages their creativity, increases their confidence and skills, and makes studying Foundation an enjoyable and rewarding experience. Foundation is a safe environment for students to question the world, challenge conventions and create exciting art and design, while developing creativity with confidence and originality. The goal is to help them progress onto a degree with an individual voice and have the skills and attributes to contribute, innovate, adapt and reflect the ever-changing world.

Frequently asked questions

How big are the classes?

Each year class sizes differ, but we usually enrol roughly 30 students. Occasionally you need to work in project groups of 5 or 6, but most often you will be working on your own projects in our studios with other creative Foundation students. It is a friendly and supportive environment where you have your own workspace to explore your creative ambitions.

How will I learn on the course?

The learning is highly varied, intended to show you all the creative ways that art, design and media can be expressed. There is some research, because you need to know how and why things have been created, which will deepen your thinking and creativity. There are mini projects that are like taster sessions, so you get to try all different disciplines which will expand your skills and horizons. You have plenty of time to express your own ideas through sketching, drawing, painting, photography, digital and film and making by hand to bring your visions to life. You get to meet many different lecturers from different courses who give talks and tasks to help you grow creatively, to open your mind to all the possible routes within the creative industries.

What materials do I need?

Sketchbooks are really important, this is where you document your research and ideas for your project as well as recording your progress. As a record of your creative process when working on projects, the more creative they are (filled with life and colour, ideas etc) the better. We also encourage you to buy the art & design materials that you like to work in (pens, paper, paint etc), but you don’t need to buy everything (or all at once).

What have Foundation graduates gone on to do?

Students can progress onto any one of the following pathway degrees here are University of Staffordshire. These are: Fashion, Animation, Cartoon & Comic Arts, Fine Art, Product Furniture Ceramics, Automotive & Transport Design, Architecture, Graphics, Illustration, & Photography.
