Meet your course leader!

Islam would like to welcome you to our BArch (Hons) Architecture course.  

Dr Islam Abohela is the course leader with extensive experience in the design and construction of the built environment.  Islam’s research focuses on the intersections between Architecture, Film and Sustainability.  He has worked in academia in four different countries namely Egypt, the UK, Turkey and Bahrain.  He is also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) in the UK with strong experience in leading Higher Education academic courses related to the design and construction of the built environment. 
Islam has significant experience in designing academic courses and related modules in accordance with the standards of relevant international quality assurance and accreditation bodies.  In addition to his academic experience, he has very strong experience in pastoral care through his training as a mental health first aider and previously as a Senior Resident at University students’ halls of residence.

Our unique course from our Stoke-on-Trent campus studios are well positioned to explore social renewal through architecture. Real briefs and collaboration projects provide valuable gateways to industry, and our interdisciplinary approach allows you to hone your practice.

A recent live brief involved our Architecture students from across all years of study collaborating on a rammed earth children's playground proposal at the nearby historic Spode site. I trained and worked as an architect in variously sized practices after studying and working both in the UK and France. In 2009, I undertook a tenure as Rome Scholar at the British School at Rome whilst undertaking PhD research.
