Meet your Course Leader

Andy would like to welcome you to BEng (Hons) Automotive and Motorsport Engineering

Andy Cash is the Course Leader with extensive experience of automotive systems and automotive powertrain.  His research focuses on cooling effects in battery technology.  He has extensive experience in the automotive industry and teaching experience in both Higher and Further Education.

Andy is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) with strong experience in leading Higher Education courses related to Automotive and Motorsport areas.  He has significant experience in designing academic courses and related modules in accordance with the standards of relevant international quality assurance and accreditation bodies.  In addition to his academic experience, he brings a wide range of practical and theoretical skills to the department.

Frequently asked questions

How big are the classes?

For some of your classes you’ll be in lectures with other engineering disciplines and break down into smaller groups for tutorials. In more specialist modules you’ll be in smaller groups with just your course cohort.

How will I learn on the course?

Your studies will be a mix of practical and theory. Generally, you’ll learn the theory before going on to demonstrate it in a practical experiment either in the laboratories or our Automotive and Motorsport workshop. Alongside these subject specific skills, we’ll work with you to develop your employability and transferable skills, so you’ll be able to approach industry with confidence.

Can I do a placement year as part of the course?

Yes, you can look to undertake a year-long industry placement and you’ll be supported by our own placements team and careers staff to highlight your opportunities to apply for placements in industry and help you with your CV, interviews and careers skills to make sure you present yourself and your talent in the best possible way. Students have gained placements at Triumph, Jaguar Land Rover and Mercedes F1, amongst others previously.

How do I get involved in the Formula Student Team, Staffordshire Uni Racing?

All students can look to get involved with our Formula Student team, they’ll talk to the new students in Welcome Week and take part in the Clubs and Societies Fair – you’ll be able to register an interest at that time.

What have graduates gone on to do?

Graduates from our Automotive and Motorsport Engineering courses have gone on to work with manufacturers and suppliers in the automotive and motorsport sectors. Some of them work for companies such as Mercedes F1, Ford, Jaguar Land Rover, Bentley, Cummins and JCB. Some of our graduates enter employment as technicians for the motorsport industry. Others work for companies competing in BTCC, World Rally and F1. Some of our graduates go on to further study.
