Welcome to your Forensic Investigation course

A big welcome and hello to all of you starting on our Forensics courses! We're really happy to have you here with us in Stoke and excited for you to get started in the interesting world of crime scene investigation and forensic science.

We know starting university can feel like a huge step, so we've planned some things to help you settle in, meet the other students on your course, and find your way around. Keep an eye out for information about welcome events and introductory meetings just for you. That’ll make sure that you’re in the right place and ready to learn all about how to investigate crimes and use science to help solve them.

Our friendly team of lecturers and support staff are here to help you learn everything you need to know and we know you're going to do great!

Course delivery

All teaching is conducted on-campus with some supplementary content delivered online via Blackboard – where possible we will also record some lectures to support your learning and revision.

You will have a range of different activities taking place across campus throughout the academic year. Some will be in traditional lecture theatres while others will take place in a classroom setting, or as part of small group tutorials. And obviously, plenty of time will be spent within our laboratories in the Science Centre and the simulation suite in Ashley 2.

Semester one activities

Jump straight in with introductory lectures that explore the core principles of forensics, from historic miscarriages of justice through to your future role in the Criminal Justice System. You'll step into the shoes of a crime scene investigator and delve into the proper procedures for securing and processing a crime scene, including evidence collection, documentation and photography.

In semester 1, you'll participate in introductory workshops where you'll learn basic laboratory procedures and get comfortable using essential tools and equipment to build a strong foundation in various scientific and investigative disciplines.

And among all that you will find the first few weeks are also a great time to meet your fellow classmates and instructors. Expect icebreakers, group activities, and introductions to your academic support network, including tutors and advisors.

Pre-Learning

There are lots of online resources that are relevant to forensics that you can access before you arrive on campus. These are not compulsory, but here are a few to get you started:

How does Staffordshire Police and the University work together? 10 Years of Partnership

Workstreams were created to ensure academia addresses real life Forensic challenges. Each work stream is assigned joint leads from within both University of Staffordshire and Staffordshire Police to prioritise and oversee the projects that sit within it.

Additionally student placement opportunities have been developed to undertake short, medium and long term projects. The designated work stream structure also allows for continuity for projects longer than 12 months where needed. There are also opportunities for students to undertake research projects (both undergraduate and postgraduate) in areas of specific interest to the partnership, during their degree studies.

The partnership is overseen by a Programme Board with senior representatives from the contributory organisations and chaired in rotation by a strategic lead from the University and the Police

Get to know our simulation space and courses before you arrive

We know that entering a mock crime scene can be scary for the first time, so why not take a moment to visit one virtually?

We have created an interactive 360 where you can see what evidence may be included in the scenes in your degree as well as links to some of the research we do at Staffordshire.
