Transport and travel

With a community of over 13,000 students and 1,600 staff, Staffordshire University acknowledges that it generates a significant amount of travel that impacts the local area. One of the most obvious and detrimental factors of staff and student travel is single-occupancy car journeys and the associated problem of road congestion.

Increased use of public transport

Staffordshire University is located very close to Stoke-on-Trent's train station, allowing easy access to the West Midlands rail network.

There are also local bus services which can be used to travel to the university.  You can use a journey planner to find the best route for travel to and from the university.

Student Smart Ticket

As a Staffordshire University student you are entitled to a Student Smart Ticket which allows you to travel on buses provided by different operators across North Staffordshire with just one ticket.

Staff travel loans

The university offers loans for annual rail and bus passes for staff, please contact us for more information.

EV Charging on Site

The completion of Phase 1 of our Electric Vehicle Charging campus transformation project means that our campus is now well-equipped to meet the increasing (and future) demand for EV Charging provisions among our staff and students.

The University has 30 double charging points run by Vend Electric across our campuses.

  • College Road Site:
6 EV Charging points including 2 Disabled EV Parking Bays on our Beacon / Mellor Car Park
  • Leek Road Site:
22 EV Charging points across campus on Car Park 1, Car Park 3, and Car Park 5.

University EV charging points are available to Staffordshire University students and staff only, and operate on a Pay As You Go basis.

Cycling to the university

The university has over 100 cycle parking places on campus, covered and un-covered.  You can use the Staffordshire government cycle route maps to plan your journey.

Sustrans, a national charity caring for the National Cycle Network to improve walking and cycling for everyone, also offer an easy to use National Cycle Map to plan journeys and route throughout the UK.

Cyclescheme

Staff are invited to benefit from a tax-free loan of bicycles and related safety and security equipment under the Government's Green Transport Plan initiative that's aimed at getting more people to travel to work on their bicycles. As a University Travel Plan initiative, we have linked with a partner, Cyclescheme. Cyclescheme offer tax-free loans for the hire of bicycles and related safety and security equipment with the option to purchase the bicycle at a Fair Market Value (FMV) price of the original value at the end of the loan period.

Eco Driving

If you must use your car to travel to the University, you can find tips on how to drive more efficiently and reduce your impact, by visiting the Energy Saving Trust.
