Haisu (Harry) Liu

Graduate story

Haisu (Harry) Liu is an educationist who endeavours to create a difference. He is the Assistant Principal of Shenzhen Mingde Experimental School, China’s first ‘free school’ – a public school jointly run by the district government and the Tencent Charity Foundation. In just two years, the school has grown to over 1,400 students, from Grade 1-9.

As Head of the English Department and International Office, Harry leads a team that initiates English teaching reform with a mission to developing the students into global citizens. Harry has established links with prestigious schools in countries around the world including Omen, Argentina, India, Russia, the United States and the United Kingdom. Hundreds of students from Mingde’s primary and middle school division have benefited from the partnership and participated in the study abroad programme. Furthermore, he is in charge of its high school division, which will start recruitment later this year.

Harry is also an entrepreneur. As former Director of Education Consortium for Gifted Youth in Shanghai, he developed the blended international curriculum with an emphasis on liberal education along with Chinese traditional culture. He led a college counselling team who have successfully helped hundreds of students pursuing first-class higher education overseas.

Global Citizen with Staffordshire University Influence

Harry’s footprint can be found around the globe; he bridges prestigious schools worldwide and strives to make positive changes to the education landscape.

He was vice president of the Chinese Students and Scholars Association at Staffordshire University from 2003 to 2005 as well as a University ambassador. He was also a warden at the international students’ hall of residence. During his time in England, he completed a successful one-year work placement and worked for Staffordshire County Council for two years before returning to China.

His connection with Staffordshire University continued after he returned to China. Harry became the first president of the Staffordshire University Chinese Alumni Association. By working with faculty and alumni in both the UK and China, he successfully held the very first official alumni “welcome home” reunion in Shanghai, which attracted over 200 alumni from the past 15 years. In honour of his contribution, the Staffordshire University Centenary Scholarship was named after him.

Harry says that his time at Staffordshire University, where he received both a degree in business studies and a master’s degree in E-business, helped him gain knowledge and skills in a global context, as well as discover his passion for working with students. He continues to devote himself to cultivating high-achieving students in China into global citizens.

Harry became a finalist for the Professional Achievement Award at the 2016 British Council’s Alumni Awards.
