This module encompasses all aspects of learner assessment, both formative (informal) and summative (formal).

It addresses how assessment relates to the wider learning journey, including contexts of delivery. It also considers the breadth of different approaches to assessment, across both formative and summative levels. 

On successful completion of study, we will issue the following award: Individual Modules Assessment and Appraisal in Healthcare Education

Course content

This module enables reflection upon the role that assessment plays in facilitating positive learning processes and outcomes.

Key principles and concepts will be related to the practicalities of assessment. This will include consideration of the effectiveness of assessment, which will draw upon concepts such as validity and reliability.

Students will be encouraged to critically analyse and reflect upon the assessment process utilised within their own workplace.

Entry requirements

A first degree (or diploma) in a Health and Social Care subject, or extensive relevant professional experience. Active involvement in teaching/assessment is strongly recommended.

IELTS score 7.

Teaching and assessment

Teaching

The primary learning strategy utilised within this module is independent learning. The foundation and direction for your learning will be through the virtual learning environment, Blackboard. This will direct you to the key content and theoretical concepts. It provides a platform for your independent reading and reflection upon how the theory can be applied to your own teaching practice, in relation to assessment of student learning.

A variety of sources will be utilised, including narrated PowerPoint Presentations as well as more interactive activities such as identification of your own learning style, formative quizzes, article critique, and online discussion forums.

Your practical experience of teaching in health or social care settings will be the basis for reflection and discussion in the online discussion forums; you will be encouraged to reflect on your teaching strategies and student feedback.

Learning support

Your course tutors will provide lots of support. But you can also take advantage of our Academic Skills team, who can help you with:

  • Study skills (including reading, note-taking and presentation skills)
  • Written English (including punctuation, grammar)
  • Academic writing (including how to reference)
  • Research skills
  • Critical thinking
  • Revision, assessment and exam skills (including time management)

Sources of financial support

Providing you are studying towards a full Masters qualification you may be able to apply for a postgraduate loan to help with tuition fees, maintenance and other associated costs.
