Develop the knowledge, skills and confidence you need to perform at the highest level as a general practice nurse.

The clinical content is aligned to NHS England (2019) General Practice Nurse Induction template.

 It also meets the standards outlined in the Health Education England, District and General Practice Nursing Services and core capabilities framework (2021) and the Competency Framework (PNCF©) as a resource tool. The experts at The University of Staffordshire are very experienced in this area and looking forward to teaching you as you start this exciting module.

This module aims to assess and implement high quality care for patients, the recognition of when higher levels of care are needed, and the referral of patients when the level of care is beyond your professional competence. The students will also have sampler and immunisation training.

On successful completion of study, we will issue the following award: Individual Modules Fundamentals of General Practice Nursing

Duration

This module is taught over three terms, September until July, days are usually Wednesday, however this may vary dependant when the external experts can attend.

Runs over three terms September 2026 to July 2027

First day - 23 September 2026 with mentors in practice to attend with students in the afternoon.

Course content

During this module, the provision of a holistic, multi-professional approach to meeting the needs of a diverse patient group will be covered, and your competency will be measured through a document assessed by a suitable qualified mentor within the students own general practice and development of a critically reflective portfolio.

Entry requirements

Students must be a registered general nurse who are relatively new to working in general practice environment or has agreed access to work in a practice environment for 1 year, with an appropriately trained nurse mentor who has at least 2 years’ experience working in general practice.

Teaching and assessment

Teaching

Scheduled Learning and Teaching Activities: (120 hours) - 90 hours Presentations and lectures, 5 hours Discussion and group work, 20 hours Directed study, 1 hour’s formative study review, 4 hours group tutorials. Guided Independent Study: (480 hours) - 300 hours Reading and study, 150 hours Portfolio development.

In addition, a minimum of 30 hours which are facilitated and supervised clinical practice hours with a mentor including competency completion.

Learning support

In addition to the excellent support you will receive from your course teaching team, our central Academic Skills team provides group and one-to-one help to support your learning in a number of areas. These include:

  • study skills such as reading, note-taking and presentation skills
  • written English, including punctuation and grammatical accuracy
  • academic writing and how to reference
  • research skills
  • critical thinking and understanding arguments
  • revision, assessment and examination skills
  • time management

Additional support

Our Student Inclusion Services support students with additional needs such as sensory impairment, or learning difficulties such as dyslexia.
