Josh Tandy - Automotive & Transport Design

Automotive & Transport Design student Josh secured a placement with Aston Martin.

Talented designer Josh Tandy, BA (Hons) Automotive & Transport Design, has created his own concept model Aston Martin car after completing a student placement with the world-famous brand.

He spent three months working at the luxury car manufacturer’s Gaydon headquarters, where he gained experience on a variety of projects. Josh, who is graduating from University of Staffordshire this summer with a BA (Hons) Automotive and Transport Design degree, said: “They also showed me the production line. They didn’t hide anything.

“They would say, ‘This is your project and we will look at it when it’s finished’. It was like being a professional designer. It was fantastic.”

Although Josh can’t reveal the exact details of his work for customers, it covered everything from vehicle buttons to scoping full interiors.

While on the placement, he also began sketching out his ideas for his final-year project at university. Now he has completed the design for his unique Aston Martin model called Ragnarok, which was exhibited at our GradEX Degree Show.

The car parts were 3D printed and he used a spray gun for the sleek paintwork. “It’s a car about passion rather than logic,” he said. “It’s got curved surfaces, which is like a signature piece.

“Having this kind of vehicle is about emotion. It’s like music. We have Spotify, but we still go to concerts as we can feel the music.”

Josh, 22, from West Bromwich, arranged the placement himself after being put in touch with a contact at Aston Martin. “I just sent my portfolio and it led to a call. I can’t thank them enough,” he added.

As part of his degree, he has also gained hands-on experience working on a range of live briefs for real clients. On the back of one of these industry projects, he has secured another placement with an automotive company after he graduates this summer.
