Sports coaching with Staffordshire alumni

Final year coaching students recently gained first-hand insight into careers in sport when University of Staffordshire alumni Megan Baldwin and Olivia Taylor returned to campus to deliver a practical coaching session.

The session formed part of the 'Contemporary Issues in Sports Coaching' module, where students explore sociological theory and how it shapes modern coaching environments. Working alongside Megan and Olivia gave students the opportunity to bring that theory to life in a practical setting, testing ideas and approaches used in real coaching environments.

Both guest speakers began their journeys at the University of Staffordshire and are now building successful careers in the sector. Megan is Head of Sport and PE at a local academy, while Olivia is completing her Postgraduate Certificate in Education and Training (PCET) with the goal of becoming a lecturer in sport.

By sharing their experiences of working in education and coaching, they gave students a valuable glimpse into the different directions a sport degree can lead.

Course leader, Jack Bullock, said:

“This session is an example of the kinds of enrichment we embed within our curricula to ensure students have the best possible experience during their time in the Department of Sport and Exercise.

"Our final year students are currently grappling with some complex sociological theory as part of the Contemporary Issues in Sport Coaching module, and this session with Megan and Olivia provided them with the opportunity to apply their knowledge and test their understanding in a fun, engaging, and educational practical setting.

"Added to that is the fact that our guests are alumni who excelled with us at Staffs and are living examples of what our students can go on to as a result of their time here.”

Bringing industry professionals and alumni into the classroom is a regular feature of sport courses at the University of Staffordshire. Guest speakers from across the sector share their expertise with students throughout the year, offering fresh perspectives, real-world insight and opportunities to connect with professionals already working in the field.

As well as enriching teaching, these sessions help students explore the wide range of careers available in sport - from coaching and teaching to performance, development and leadership roles - while building valuable industry networks before they graduate.

Students on sport courses at the University of Staffordshire benefit from hands-on learning, industry engagement and opportunities to connect with professionals across the sector, helping them develop the knowledge, confidence and connections needed for their future careers.
