Credibility interview

As part of the UKVI’s commitment to ensuring the integrity of the Student Visa route, you may be invited to attend a credibility interview. This interview is a standard but critical component of the visa application process.

For the University, this is the final stage in validating the sponsorship decision we made when issuing your CAS. It is your opportunity to demonstrate that you are a genuine student who has made an informed, professional decision to invest in a UK degree.

What to Expect

The interview is typically conducted by a UKVI Entry Clearance Officer via video link or telephone and lasts approximately 30–60 minutes. The session will be conducted entirely in English. You are expected to speak with authority and independence regarding:

  • Your Academic Intent: Why this specific course is the logical next step for your career.
  • Your Institutional Choice: Why [University Name] was selected over other UK and global competitors.
  • Your Financial Preparedness: A clear, unrehearsed understanding of your funding, tuition costs, and UK living expenses.

Preparation: The "Non-Scripted" Standard

At University of Staffordshire, we expect our sponsored students to be independent thinkers. The Home Office looks for genuine, personal motivations. Do not use memorised scripts or agency-provided templates. Key Areas of Research:

  1. Course Modules: Which specific modules align with your career goals?
  2. Comparative Analysis: Why the UK? Why not your home country, the USA, or Australia?
  3. Post-Study Vision: How will the Return on Investment (ROI) of this degree manifest in your home country’s job market?
  4. Logistics: Where will you live and how will you commute?

Frequently asked questions

Does being called for an interview mean there is a problem with my application?

Not necessarily. Interviews are a routine part of the UKVI’s quality control. However, your performance is critical. If your answers contradict the evidence provided in your CAS or financial documents, your visa may be refused on credibility grounds.

Can I have a representative or translator with me?

No. The interview must be conducted by you alone. One of the primary functions of the interview is to verify that your English language proficiency meets the standard required to thrive in a UK academic environment

What happens if I miss my interview appointment?

Failure to attend without a verifiable, emergency reason will result in an automatic visa refusal. If you are refused on these grounds, the University will review its sponsorship of your application, and it may lead to the permanent withdrawal of your CAS.

How soon will I know the outcome?

The interviewer does not make the final decision. They record your responses and submit them to an Entry Clearance Officer (ECO). You will usually receive a decision on your visa within the standard UKVI processing times after the interview is complete.
