Studying Sport and Exercise Science

Introducing your course leader - Dr Andrew Wilkinson

I would like to welcome you to the Sport and Exercise Science Course at the University of Staffordshire. I’m Dr Andrew Wilkinson, course leader, and a former student on this very course.

I’m a sports enthusiast and have always been fascinated by the world of sport and exercise. I have since specialised in Sport and Exercise Psychology, just one of the disciplines you will experience on our course, and my research focuses upon psychological and physiological stress responses, and how these influence performance under pressure. When working with athletes I help them to become more confident, more in control, and to see pressure as a challenge, rather than a threat, so that they can achieve their goals. This is the same when I’m working with students, and thanks to my expertise I hope to support you in a similar way.

Once in a lifetime experience at St George's Park

As a Sport and Exercise Science student you'll get the chance to use fantastic facilities such as those at St George's Park, the home of English football.

During their time there, our first and third year students were able to make use of the gym facilities, the hydrotherapy lab, and run some drills on the outdoor pitches.

University of Staffordshire plays host to Vålerenga under-14s football team

In partnership with Stoke City Football Club, University of Staffordshire welcomed Vålerenga under-14s football team to our Stoke-on-Trent campus, to participate in various tests and practical sessions hosted by our sport and exercise students.

The day started with the group testing their leg strength on our Biodex Isokinetic Dynamometer, before heading upstairs to learn about the psychology of the sport, testing their nerves and reactions with simple activities.

The session culminated on our 3G astro-turf pitch, where two current Sport Coaching students led the team through various activities. The day showcased the skills and learning from our Sport and Exercise Science, Sport Psychology, and Sport Coaching courses.
