Gothic Literature and the Vampire

Masterclass

Outline

The Gothic is a key trope of Western literature, revealing the anxieties which a culture fails to acknowledge and deal with openly. Over the centuries, it has migrated from literature and art into film, music, and popular culture. We’ll carry out some literary critical close reading on extracts of vampire literature from the last two hundred years. The class will come to a close with the opportunity to write a fragment of your own vampire story, using a choice of prompts.
