Open Day guide for neurodivergent visitors

We know visiting a university for the first time can involve lots of new information and unfamiliar spaces, people and routines. This guide will help you plan your Open Day so it works for you.

If you’re neurodivergent (such as having autism or ADHD), experience anxiety, or simply find it useful to know what to expect, we hope it will give you reassurance. You can choose our main Open Day programme, a quieter programme or a combination of both.

Before your Open Day

Before the event, we'll send you an online programme so you can look at the available sessions. You don't have to attend everything. It can help to choose the sessions that are most important to you in advance and allow time between activities for breaks.

If there is anything we can do to make your visit easier, you can contact us before the Open Day to talk through your requirements.

Check where your Open Day is

The majority of courses are delivered at our Stoke-on-Trent which means Open Days here tend to be busier. We run a dedicated quiet programme for all Open Days at Stoke-on-Trent.

If your course is delivered at Stafford campus or London campus then your Open Day will be there. Open Days are less busy at our smaller campuses, and we'll still be able to make accommodations for a quieter, more comfortable experience when you visit. Once you have completed your booking for an Open Day at Stafford or London, you will be able to make us aware of any special requirements you may have.

Bringing someone with you

Parents and supporters are very welcome at our Open Days and can accompany you during your visit. Having someone familiar with you can make visiting a new environment easier, so please bring them along.

Talk to us before you visit

If there's something you'd like to know before arriving, please get in touch. It might be about the location of a room, what happens during a session, how busy somewhere is likely to be, or something else that would make you feel more comfortable.

On the day

Arriving at Stoke-on-Trent campus

For our Stoke-on-Trent Open Day, registration takes place in The Catalyst on our Leek Road site. If you're travelling by car, free Open Day parking is available on our Leek Road car parks. Our student ambassadors will help direct you when you arrive.

If you're travelling by train, Stoke-on-Trent railway station is a short walk from campus and you'll find student ambassadors at the station and around campus. Our ambassadors wear red uniforms, so you'll know who to approach if you need directions, aren't sure where to go or would simply like some help.

Quiet programme

If you'd prefer a calmer start to your Open Day, you can join our quiet programme at our Stoke-on-Trent campus. It’s ideal for visitors who may benefit from a smaller-group and quieter introduction to the day.

Choosing the Quiet Programme doesn't mean you have to spend your whole visit separately from the main Open Day. It provides a more relaxed way to begin your visit, become familiar with the campus and access some additional information before joining other activities.

Quiet programme schedule

Quiet registration takes place separately on the first floor of The Catalyst before the main programme begins. The schedule is split into the following activities:

1. Quiet Registration

Two female visitors and a male student ambassador are walking around campus at an open day

Campus tours and walking

The Open Day involves moving between different buildings and there will be some walking during campus and accommodation tours. There are campus tours are available on the quiet programme and main open day programme.

  • Campus tours take approximately 45 minutes
  • Tours of our accommodation take approximately 30 minutes

Comfortable shoes are recommended, and you don't have to complete a full tour if you'd prefer just to sample what’s on offer.

 Main Open Day programme

The main Open Day includes subject immersion sessions, talks, campus and accommodation tours, opportunities to meet lecturers and students, and information about student support.

Some areas of campus can be busy during an Open Day, particularly around registration and between popular sessions. You are welcome to take breaks during your visit. And you don't need to attend every activity.

Subject immersion sessions

This is your opportunity to experience the course or subject area that really interests you. Sessions vary between subjects and may include practical activities, demonstrations, tours of facilities, talks from lecturers or opportunities to meet current students. If you'd like to know more about what will happen in your particular session before attending, please contact us.

Talk to support teams

Chat to the teams who will be here to support you if you choose to study with us. Our Student Inclusion team will be available to talk to you about support for disabled and neurodivergent students, including any adjustments that may be available while you study. You'll also be able to find out about student wellbeing.

Our Accommodation team will be there too. You can ask questions about living in student accommodation and talk through anything you might want to consider when deciding where you would feel most comfortable living.

You don't need to know exactly what support you might need before you come and talk to us. Open Day is an opportunity for you – and your parent or supporter if you’d like them with you – to ask questions, talk through any concerns and see what’s available before you make your university decision.

Supporting you on Open Days

Taking a break

You can take a break at any point during your Open Day and you don't need to attend activities back-to-back.

The first floor of The Catalyst is generally quieter than the main Open Day areas, so this can be a good place for some time away from the busiest parts of the event. There may also be other quieter areas available across campus during the day. Simply speak to one of our student ambassadors and they’ll be happy to help.

You may also find it helpful to build some gaps into your programme in advance. If you leave an activity because you need a break, that's absolutely fine. When you're ready, you can rejoin your planned activities or speak to one of our team if you need help deciding where to go next.

If you need help during the day

You don't need to manage everything on your own. If you're unsure where to go, need a break, have missed a session or your plans have changed, speak to one of our student ambassadors or a member of staff. It's absolutely fine if your Open Day doesn't go exactly to plan. We'll help you work out what you'd like to do next.

After your Open Day

After visiting campus, we understand there'll be lots to think about. You may even have new questions you want to ask and we're here throughout your application journey. You're more than welcome to visit us again, we run campus tours where you can take a guided one-to-one tour of campus with a current student and have the opportunity to speak to a lecturer about your course.

We're here to support you

If you need help or have any questions about attending an open day or studying at University of Staffordshire, please get in touch.
