Immerse yourself into the world of Automotive & Transport Design on our exciting and industry focused course. You’ll learn a wide-ranging set of design and communication skills, learning from our team of expert academics and professionals in our dynamic design studio, making use of our cutting-edge digital and technical facilities.

You’ll design everything from cars, yachts and trains, right through to futuristic concepts for games and film. With access to sector-leading facilities you can visualise your designs using Unreal Engine, Alias, Blender and VRED in our VR labs, Virtual Production Suites and SmartZone.

You’ll work with industry giants in the automotive and transportation sector, including Bentley, Jaguar Land Rover and JCB. You’ll apply your skills to collaborative projects with world-renowned brands, building a portfolio of innovative and exciting work that explores the future of the way we travel, designing vehicles for land, sea and air.

On the course, you’ll get the opportunity to collaborate with other creative students, including those studying subjects like Games Design, Architecture and Product Design, replicating life in industry where multi-disciplinary teams are common place.

Work placements

By choosing the placement route, you’ll have the opportunity to spend a year in industry working at a selected company. You’ll be able to develop your skills, knowledge and experience as part of your degree and return to the third year feeling even more confident about tackling your negotiated major project.

Course content

The first year of the course is designed to provide you with solid foundations, focusing on core design skills like sketching, material exploration, and the role of CAD as a visualisation tool. Live projects with Industry give you the opportunity to put these skills into practice and get your first taste of working with clients.

In the second year, you’ll focus on developing further specific skills required to work in the automotive and transport industry, including clay modelling and advanced CAD visualisation. You’ll work collaboratively through live projects with industry that will develop your independence and introduce subjects like UX Design, consumer behaviour, emotional design and sustainability.

The third year allows you to specialise, tailoring your Major Project to your target career, putting all the skills developed into practice. Additional projects with industry and competition briefs will provide you with new opportunities to develop stand out portfolio projects. You’ll consider the changing landscape of mobility and your place within it. The third-year culminates in an end-of-year Degree Show, as well as the opportunity to exhibit your work at a national design show.

A typical week on the course will include tutorials, seminars, technical demonstrations, and software tutorials.

Staff

The course is led by Dan Lewis, Course Director for Design, who has extensive industry and academic experience. You'll also be taught by Rich Gilmartin and Nigel Turner who both have wide-ranging and diverse industry experience.

Rich has been in Automotive Design for 25 years working on brands including Land Rover, MG, Bentley, Rolls Royce, and Hongqi. He has worked on many production and concept cars throughout his career but the Bentley Mulsanne is the achievement he is most proud of.

Dan has years of industry experience and has developed products for some of the UK’s largest retailers, seeing him travel extensively across Europe and the Far East to work with suppliers and manufacturers. Dan’s PhD and research focuses on Emotional Design, considering how people connect to products because of the way they look, what they do, and what they mean to us. Dan’s research feeds into our curriculum and informs some of the teaching at Staffordshire University.

Nigel has spent 10 years working for the world-leading tyre and motorsport brand Michelin, in various roles from product research and development, to brand management and licensing, specializing in developing mobility solutions that increase performance and enhance mobility across all forms of transport. Nigel has successfully delivered innovative products for the car accessories market including foot pumps and snow chains. Prior to working at Michelin Nigel studied at the Royal College of Art, and has acquired great experience designing for luxury homeware brands such as Wedgwood and Asprey.

Tim Forrester, Keeley Marshall and Francesco Feltrin also bring a wealth of materials, manufacturing and consumer behaviour knowledge to the course. Tim Potts and a team of specialist Associate Lecturers deliver additional taught content, technical demonstrations and software teaching on the course.

Associate Lecturer, Tim Potts is a freelance designer and sculptor working with a wide range of clients. At Bentley, Tim worked as a member of the modelling team in the Styling studio where he was able to combine his love of automotive design with sculpture. Tim had the opportunity to redesign the Flying B emblem, the highlight of his association with the world-famous company.

You will also learn and undertake technical demonstrations from our extensive and immensely knowledgeable technicians who bring a vast wealth of industry knowledge and global experience.

The Horizon Fund enabled me to showcase my third year project at the New Designers Exhibition in London. The funding helped towards resources such as paints for my model and printing costs for my exhibition boards. The remainder of the funding covered my travel expenses and without this I doubt it would have been possible to attend. The Horizon fund played a crucial part in enabling myself to connect with industry professionals and helped me secure my first job within weeks of the show. I am extremely grateful that such a fund exists as it enriched my passion for pursuing a career in the design industry.
