Cassy - University of Staffordshire Psychology Student
Any new endeavour in life is bound to result in feelings of apprehension, self-doubt and a good old bout of nerves. Everyone feels the same way. This sentiment is never truer than when starting university. Even more so after almost fifteen years spent out of education and a life dedicated to being a wife and mother. Finally doing something for myself felt incredibly selfish and daunting. But from the moment I stepped foot through the doors of the Science Building (my apparent educational home for the next three years) I felt such a sense of belonging. Everything felt right. I felt as though I had a purpose, and I was able to set myself goals for the first time in a long time.
The welcoming atmosphere seemed to radiate from all around. From lecturers and fellow students to the Science Lab Café staff and everyone in between.
As the weeks have passed, I feel as if I have gone from strength to strength and that is all thanks to the encouragement and opportunities that are offered to every student.
For example, there is always someone to help whether that be a fellow student, members of the Psychology Society, your academic mentor or even the wonderful Buddy system.
Here, it’s not just academically that you will grow but personally. As a self-confessed previous wallflower, I have always felt content blending into the background. Here, I feel safe to push my boundaries and to explore the possibilities of who I could be.
