How Business students are creating content, building confidence and preparing for industry

What does studying Business actually look like in practice?

At the University of Staffordshire, students aren’t just learning about business - they’re actively creating, collaborating and developing the skills they’ll need in the real world.

The Business School team has recently created a dedicated podcasting space within the School itself, giving students a place to experiment with content creation, build confidence and explore new ideas in a supportive environment.

A new student-led podcast focused on inclusivity, diversity and belonging will be the first to use the space, led by student host Arib.

Arib explains, “Using this space has helped me connect with people who are interested in the same industry as me. It’s built my confidence and helped me grow my network.”

A space designed for students

What makes this initiative stand out is that the space is open to students across the Business School, giving them the opportunity to create their own podcasts, develop new ideas and gain hands-on experience.

Arib continues, “This podcast resonates with me because I like talking to people and I enjoy having conversations about different topics. I also find podcasts one of the best ways to have those sorts of communications.”

Whether contributing to the flagship inclusivity podcast or creating their own content, students are encouraged to explore topics they’re passionate about and develop their own voice.

Learning by doing

Students using the space will be involved in planning, recording and producing podcast episodes, gaining practical experience in content creation, storytelling and digital communication.

Craig Holdcroft, Course Leader for Digital and Social Media Marketing BSc, explains, “Developing practical content creation and editing skills is essential for students entering the digital and social media marketing industry.”

“These capabilities not only enhance their future employability but also equip them with a deeper understanding of how content is produced, managed, and delivered across platforms.”

By working with professional equipment and dedicated filming environments, students gain insight into how content is created in real industry settings.

Developing skills that matter

The introduction of the podcasting space reflects a wider shift towards more practical, applied learning across Business courses.

“We have listened closely to the student voice and, in response, have made our courses more practical, with greater inclusion of technology such as camera skills and filming to better reflect industry expectations,” Craig continues.

“Above all I want my students to shine and stand out from the rest.”

Students are also encouraged to explore emerging technologies as part of their learning.

“Beyond content creation, it provides valuable insight into how VR and emerging technologies like augmented reality are shaping the future of branding, gaming, and consumer engagement.”

A space to grow

As digital content continues to evolve, the ability to create, communicate and connect is becoming increasingly important.

Craig explains, “Regardless of the specific role students pursue, having this broader perspective is invaluable in today’s fast-paced digital landscape.”

“Our student body will be ready for the future challenge.”

With the first podcast episodes set to launch soon, the space offers students the opportunity to build confidence, develop industry-ready skills and gain real experience - whether that’s contributing to the flagship podcast or creating something entirely their own.
