Our learning environment

At our nursery, each room has been carefully designed to reflect the needs of children at different stages of their early years, from the calm, nurturing environment of our baby unit through to the inspiring, independent spaces of preschool.

Together, these environments form a seamless journey that supports children as they grow, learn, and discover the world around them. We believe that the environment is a powerful teacher. By surrounding children with natural materials, sustainable resources, and opportunities for child-led exploration, we encourage them to develop curiosity, independence, and a deep respect for nature. Every space reflects our ethos of sustainability and care for the planet, helping children begin their journey towards becoming eco-conscious citizens of the future.

As children move from room to room, they build on strong foundations in all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) developing communication and language through conversation and storytelling, physical development through movement and exploration, and personal, social and emotional skills through secure relationships and meaningful play.

Children will be provided with learning opportunities and experiences that support the acquisition of the prerequisite skills that underpin and equip them for tomorrow; they become resilient, confident, and full of wonder. Not only will they be ready for the next stage of education, but also ready to make a positive contribution to the world around them.

Our uniquely designed outdoor environment

Our outdoor learning space is designed to blend structured play with the freedom of nature, making it a perfect setting for children to explore and learnThis area features a variety of play equipment, including slides and balance structures. The wooden planters, child safe plants and insect area, introduce children to the natural world, fostering a sense of curiosity and respect for the environment.

Our outdoor areas are an extension of our classroom, where learning continues amidst fresh air and natural light, giving children the opportunity to experience the weather and all its elements. Our outdoor environment empowers children to take risks, set their own challenges and move freely all whilst being immersed in nature.

Our uniquely designed indoor environment

At our nursery, we believe the environment is more than just a building, it’s a place where children feel inspired, nurtured, and connected to the world around them. Our purpose-built, net zero carbon setting has been thoughtfully designed to bring together sustainability, comfort, and curiosity in every corner.

Sapling and Willow

Our Saplings and Willow unit is a calm, nurturing space designed to feel like a home-from-home.

Here, our youngest children are cherished as individuals and given the warmth, security, and encouragement they need to begin their lifelong journey of learning. The environment has been carefully planned to support the areas of the EYFS in natural and meaningful ways. Soft furnishings, low-level mirrors, cosy corners, and plenty of open space allow babies and toddlers to explore at their own pace. These opportunities build strong foundations for physical development, whether through rolling, crawling, climbing, or those first proud steps.

Language and communication are nurtured through gentle interaction, songs, stories, and everyday conversation. Practitioners create moments of connection during play and care routines, laying the foundations for rich communication and language skills. Relationships are at the heart of this unit. A familiar team offers consistent care, helping children feel secure, confident, and ready to explore. These strong bonds, alongside opportunities for early interactions and group play, foster a sense of belonging and promote personal, social, and emotional development.

Natural light fills the rooms through large windows and doors, keeping children connected to the outdoors and the changing seasons. Materials are thoughtfully chosen, from natural wood and soft textiles to recycled and real-life objects, sparking curiosity while reflecting our sustainability ethos. Children’s independence is encouraged by accessible resources and child-sized furniture, empowering them to make choices and shape their play.

Saplings and Willow is a place of love, trust, and discovery, where babies and toddlers are celebrated for who they are, and where the earliest foundations of curiosity, resilience, and joy are laid.

Maple room

The Maple room is a vibrant, adaptable environment designed to meet the energy, curiosity, independence and growing confidence of the children.

The room is open and flexible, with child-sized furniture and accessible resources that encourage children to make their own choices. This independence supports their growing sense of self and builds confidence in their abilities, directly linking to personal, social, and emotional development. At this stage, children begin to develop greater awareness of their own emotions and physical needs. Practitioners support self-regulation through calm routines, visual cues, and consistent reassurance. Independence in toileting and care routines is gently encouraged, helping children build confidence and a sense of pride in looking after themselves.

Play becomes more social at this stage. Practitioners support and encourage turn-taking, sharing, and group play. These experiences strengthen communication while also teaching empathy and cooperation. Through role play, small-world setups, and story times, children develop a growing vocabulary and expressive skills, building on the EYFS focus of communication and language. Children in Maple are full of physical energy, and our environment provides plenty of opportunities for climbing, balancing, running, and exploring. Fine motor skills are supported through creative activities like mark-making, threading, and exploring natural textures, embedding strong physical development foundations.

The Maple room celebrates sustainability with recycled and real-life resources. Children engage in imaginative, open-ended play while learning to respect the world around them. Natural light, planting experiences, and seasonal features help children notice changes in their environment, sparking conversations about nature and the wider world.

Oak room

Our Oak room is where children take their final steps before school, building on their independence and developing the skills and confidence they need for the next stage of their journey.

The environment is rich in opportunities for communication and language, with cosy book corners, storytelling sessions, role play areas, and interactive discussions led by practitioners. Children are encouraged to share ideas, ask questions, and express themselves, supporting both their vocabulary and confidence. Independence is at the heart of Oak. Children are encouraged to make choices, solve problems, and lead their own learning. Open-ended resources, real-life objects, and sustainable materials support personal, social, and emotional development, giving children the confidence to try new things, take risks, and work collaboratively with others.

Physical development is supported through both large-scale construction and fine motor activities like writing, drawing, and creative play. Outdoor access remains central, giving children plenty of space for movement, balance, and exploration, while also supporting wellbeing. Our preschool curriculum is carefully linked to the EYFS. Practitioners weave early literacy, mathematics, and understanding of the world into everyday play and experiences. Interactive displays and eco-conscious resources celebrate children’s achievements and inspire pride in their learning.

The Oak room is a place of excitement and challenge, where children’s curiosity is valued and their voices are heard. By the time they leave for school, they are resilient, confident, and ready for their next adventure.

About our rooms

Every room is filled with natural daylight, thanks to wide glass doors and roof windows that create a warm, welcoming atmosphere. This not only reduces the need for artificial lighting but also gives children a true sense of the seasons and time of day. Clever ventilation and air-source heat pumps mean the space feels cosy in winter and fresh in summer, all while keeping our carbon footprint low and promoting a healthy learning environment.

The materials we’ve chosen for our nursery, from recycled wood to non-toxic plants and upcycled resources, are both sustainable and stimulating. Children love exploring textures, colours, and objects that spark questions about the world, helping them learn through real, hands-on experiences.

Even when indoors, children remain closely connected to nature. Indoor planting, natural wood features, and an open, linking walkway, bring the outside in, offering opportunities to notice seasonal changes, enjoy sensory play, and develop observation skills.

Our classrooms are open, flexible, and designed with children’s voices in mind. Movable furniture made from sustainably sourced materials allows us to adapt spaces to children’s interests – whether they are building, role-playing, or enjoying calm reflection. This flexibility supports independence, creativity, and child-led learning. We also celebrate children’s achievements with interactive displays powered by solar energy. Children delight in seeing their creations showcased in this innovative way, while also learning about how energy can be used responsibly.

Above all, our indoor environment is designed to make children feel safe, inspired, and valued – a place where they can play, explore, and grow.

"Staff understand the importance of building secure relationships with children and are attentive to their emotional needs. They stay close to young children when they appear unsure and provide comfort to them when needed."

"Children are independent. They learn to do things for themselves and gain a sense of responsibility. They tidy up when they finish playing and take it upon themselves to clean up water from the floor when they spill it."
