Course outline

The BA (Hons) Education course has been designed and developed as a final ‘top-up’ year progression route for work-based students who have completed a Foundation Degree in Education. If you are a member of support staff such as a teaching assistant or a volunteer in an educational setting and are engaged in work with children and young people, then this course could be for you. The aim of the course is to deepen your professional understanding and knowledge through academic study as a reflective practitioner.

Course content

Attendance is four hours per week from September to July at one of the university or college locations where the course is run. Currently the course is run at five different locations across the Midlands and North-West of the country.

The course comprises four modules, which include:

  • Changes and Developments in Education;
  • Doing Education Differently;
  • Individual Research Project;
  • The Reflective Practitioner.

Entry requirements

The course has been designed for those with an appropriate Foundation Degree in Education or similar.

Teaching and learning

Tutor support is practical and considerate of students. Electronic support is high, supplied by tutors who reply to student email and through a comprehensive virtual learning environment (VLE) which provides you, in each module you will study, with a range of learning materials from web links and PowerPoint lecture notes to discussion forums, interactive media and voice threads of key teaching points.

Assessment

With the support of our experienced teaching team, you’ll master the skills that help others learn. You’ll benefit from your tutors’ experience in different educational roles. We also have an Institute for Education Policy Research which helps shape education research, policy and practice.

Different people learn in different ways. To help everyone get the most out of their studies, we teach students through a blend of:

  • Lectures
  • Guest speakers
  • Tutorials
  • Workshops
  • Seminars
  • Virtual Learning Environment online

Employment opportunities

Many of you completing the course will pursue a career in teaching. Those aspiring to teach either in the Primary, Secondary or FE sector need to research the Department for Education requirements for their sector and subject area.

Graduate destinations

Current destinations include learning support assistants in schools, primary and secondary teacher training routes either through PGCEs or School Direct, and routes into post compulsory education and training via PGCEs.

Successful graduates may also apply for the MA in Education at Staffordshire University.
