Become a career-ready engineer

You’ll combine technical engineering skills and knowledge of construction methods with how to manage a project from start to finish

Cutting-edge facilities

Get hands-on in our materials testing and renewable energy labs, as well as our SmartZone where you can explore 3D printing and prototyping

Hands-on projects

Solve real engineering problems, work on live industry briefs, design simulated models and explore virtual technologies

Become a hands-on engineer who can manage building projects from the design stage through to construction.

There is huge demand for construction experts who combine technical engineering skills with the ability to lead teams, analyse problems and adapt to new technology. This course will take you through the whole process, whether you’re creating brand new homes and commercial buildings or retrofitting properties to be more energy efficient.

You’ll learn about core building types, structural principles and sustainable materials, along with how to integrate smart systems. We also cover how to put together a bid and understand contracts, costings and time management.

On the design side, you’ll use industry-standard BIM software to create simulated models – and bring sites to life with VR-powered walkthroughs.

You can draw on our links with engineering companies too, including opportunities for industrial visits, placements and real-world projects. And on campus, you’ll be able to test materials, 3D print your prototypes, and explore PV panels, wind turbines and other renewable energy systems.

The course can lead to lots of career opportunities, including roles as project engineers and project managers.

On successful completion of study, we will issue the following award: BEng (Hons) Construction Engineering with Management

Duration

  • Full-time course runs for 3 years
  • Full-time with a placement year runs for 4 years
  • Full-time with a foundation year runs for 4 years

Course content

You will develop engineering design and project management skills through real-world projects that build your professional practice.

We also cover fundamental concepts related to mechanics, fluids, thermodynamics, and electrical and electronic engineering. You can then turn theory into practice to understand everything from how a beam bends to how a DC circuit works.

As you explore modern building design, you’ll interpret drawings, conduct surveys and apply basic analysis. You will also use building information modelling (BIM) software to create digital designs.

We will introduce you to building types, basic structural principles, health and safety, sustainability and the environmental impact of construction. You’ll also explore construction law, contracts, how to prepare bids, pricing strategies and cost estimation.

Teaching and assessment

Teaching

You will be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops and laboratory practicals. Seminars enable you to discuss and develop your understanding of topics covered in lectures in smaller groups of around 16-18 students. In addition, you will have timetabled meetings with your personal tutor at least twice a year. You will be taught in first-class learning spaces throughout your course. Many of our courses are accredited or recognised by professional, statutory or regulatory bodies.

Assessment

Your course will provide you with opportunities to test your understanding of your subject informally before you complete the formal assessments that count towards your final mark. Each module normally includes practice or ‘formative’ assessments, for which you receive feedback from your tutor. Practice assessments are developmental and any grades you receive for them do not count towards your module mark. There is a formal or ‘summative’ assessment at the end of each module. This includes a range of coursework assessments, such as essays, reports, portfolios, performance, presentations, final year, independent project and written examinations. The grades from formal assessments count towards your module mark.

Learning support

In addition to the excellent support you will receive from your course teaching team, our central Academic Skills team provides group and one-to-one help to support your learning in a number of areas. These include:

  • study skills such as reading, note-taking and presentation skills
  • written English, including punctuation and grammatical accuracy
  • academic writing and how to reference
  • research skills
  • critical thinking and understanding arguments
  • revision, assessment and examination skills
  • time management

Additional support

Our Student Inclusion Services support students with additional needs such as sensory impairment, or learning difficulties such as dyslexia.

Feedback

Examination feedback may take a variety of formats. However, as a minimum, generic feedback will be made available to all students who take written examinations.
